I also got almost enough kangaroo for a plaiting project I’m working on:
Initially I thought these five skins would be enough kangaroo for 55 feet of 8 plait, but I think I’m going to need at least one more skin (probably two). I just ordered a couple more skins just in case. It would be enough, but with this project being eight plait, I have wider strands and can’t use as much of the middles of the skins.
Yesterday I made some progress on the 8 plait signal whip.
The overlay is basically finished. I’m at the part where I need to start adding in the plaited cracker. That’s probably my least favorite part of making signal whips. Braiding the cracker really makes my hands sore. However I’m pretty sure this signal whip will get finished today, then I can get back to work on the five foot bullwhip!
The person that made these for me makes them for one of the top whipmakers and also for one of the top whip sellers in the USA.
Personally the two whip making jobs that I like the least are making falls and making crackers. I’m very glad that I found someone to make crackers for me. Now I just need someone to make falls for me…
Since I just had a ton of these come in, the Whip Deal of the Day (for 12/12/09 only) is 33% off all crackers; nylon or polypro.
Today’s Whip Deal of the Day (for 11/30/09 only) is every order of $20 will get 10 free polypro crackers. You don’t need to do anything special, I’ll just add the polypro crackers to orders over $20 when I’m packing up the order to ship it.
Yesterday I was cleaning out the pocket of my whipbag and was amazed at how messy the pocket was. In this pocket I carry a small container of dressing, a fid, fall, crackers, and small knife.
Usually I throw a handfull of crackers in there and when it starts getting empty I throw another handfull in. It can be hard to find things in the pocket with the crackers everywhere, so I braided a little “Cracker Holder”.
These are 4 plait and made for kangaroo hide!
Here’s a close up picture of the Cracker Holder in its open position.
You thread your crackers over the loop (the 12 o’clock postition in the picture) then close it by putting the turkshead through the loop.
This makes finding things in my whipbag much easier if all my crackers are attached.
If you are interested in a Bullwhip Cracker Holder they are available in the “Bullwhip Accessories” page for $9.00 with shipping included. I’ll also throw in a couple of crackers for FREE!!
