Bullwhip Tranny’s

Bullwhip Tranny’s

Well I’ve started making an Indiana Jones IV style bullwhip.  Originally I had posted that I was going to make them how I normally make my bullwhips without the rigid transition area.  When I started making this whip, without thinking I started binding the transitions.  So the whip will have the rigid transition.

I was talking with someone that the were telling me that they thought the long stiff tranny is was part of the new bullwhips look.  We haven’t seen much of this bullwhip, but if I recall correctly there are movie stills of Indy’s bullwhip with a more traditional transition and the Jacka style.

This whip is going to be 8 feet in lenth and it’s got an 8 inch handle with a lead loaded butt.

I have enough of the proper colored hides to make a 4 foot whip, and another 8 foot whip (possibly a 10 foot if I’m lucky!).

Hopefully I’ll find time today to do some of the plaiting on the overlay, and finish the whip tomorrow…but we’ll see.

Today my daughter and I are going to a “Kangaroo Farm” that’s about an hours drive from my house to take the kangaroo tour.  I’ve heard they let you feed the kangaroos!

Bullwhip’s Weight

Bullwhip’s Weight

This morning I was thinking about how import the weight of a bullwhips thong is.   A few weeks ago I cracked some latigo bullwhips that didn’t have much of a core and the thongs were very light.  The result was a whip that took a lot of arm strenght to crack…and they were very difficult to do mulitple cracks with.

Then after cracking the lighter whips and I tried cracking one of my whips with the double plaited belly that whip practically cracked itself.

Then I’ve been thinking about single tail / singal whips and how the shot loaded belly makes it easier to crack than a whip without a shot loaded belly (due to lack of handle and traditionally shorter lenght).

I think my whips are on the right track with the distribution of weight in the thong.

Last night I finished the overlay on a long handled bullwhip, but I didn’t have any falls, so I started a batch of them and they should be done tomorrow and I can finishe the whip then.  Also I started a 30 inch single tail whip and my new way of making the shot bag from masking and duct tape really seems to be working out well. I also finished the overlay on that whip, but haven’t braided the cracker onto it yet.

Once those whips are finished I’m going to make a couple of whips with the Indy IV look.  I’m looking forward to making those!

Bullwhips coming down the pike…

Bullwhips coming down the pike…

Now that I finished that single tail my next project is to finish making a long handled bullwhip that I started about a week and a half ago.  It’s a 5.5 foot aussie bullwhip with a 12 inchsping steel handle.  I’ve got everything done except for the last layer.  I need to cut and prepare the lace and braid the overlay.

After that I’ll be starting making and Indy IV bullwhip.  I’ve thought a lot about how I’m going to make this bullwhip and I’m going to make it with the new Indy whip look, but not construction. So I’ll make how I normally make my whips, so no long rigid handle to thong transition.

My thinking is this:  I am trying to develop my own style as a whipmaker not just crank out copies.  Anyone can make a copy of a Morgan or Jacka and doing that doesn’t really set you apart from all the whipmakers.  the reason people get a whip from me is they like how my whips handle and if they want a Jacka they can get one of his…and I want to make whips that I handle how I like them to handle, not bullwhips that Jacka likes.

Easy Day…

Easy Day…

Today I don’t have much going on…except for a ton of work I should be doing.  I may try to slack off a bit and work some more on the single tail whip that I started.  So far all that is done is the shotbag…so it’s got a bit of work before it’s finished.

Yesterday I did an evening gig at a school and did some whipcracking in it.  In the past I didn’t do any whipcracking in my elementary school gigs, but recently I added it.  I’ve been hearing that it’s one of the highlights of the show.  In schools I do a reading presention and I use the whips to show how I learned to make them…from books.

I’ll post pictures of the single tail whip as I get more work on it finished.

Single Tail whip shot bag

Single Tail whip shot bag

I’m trying a new style of shot bag for a single tail whip. In the past I’ve used a leather shot bag taped together with duct tape.  I’ve heard from several sources that one of the top whipmakers uses just masking tape for his shot bag.

I made a tube out of masking tape and rolled it around a Fiberglass Stockwhip Handle Foundation with the sticky side out.  The reason I used that was becase it was tapered.   then I rolled that onto a strip of duct tape with the sticky side in.  so that gave me a tip that is pretty durable.

Since the tube is very thin, I can fit more weight into the same diameter as a whip with a leather shot bag.  And from what Morgan has told me “heavier is better with a signal whip”.

Mini-bullwhip

Mini-bullwhip

I don’t know if I ever posted pictures of this little bullwhip / single tail.  I’m not sure what to call it.  I made it a while ago out of leftover pieces of kangaroo from larger bullwhips.

Single tail whip, bullwhip, signal whip

It’s got a 6 inch handle and a shot loaded belly with a braided cracker.  Basically I made it like a  signal whip / single tail, but put a 6 inch handle in it.

Cutting Kangaroo Lace…

Cutting Kangaroo Lace…

Today I’m on the road performing and normally I try to make a whip during my downtime while I travel, but not this trip.   I don’t have enough free time this trip (my schedule is jam packed).

I have been cutting lace from the leftover centers of the kangaroo hides.

Kangaroo skin lace

These “scrap” pieces aren’t enought for a whole whip or even a layer of a bullwhip, but if I cut them into lace they can be the knots on the whips or if I could make a two tone signal whip or something like that.

Hopefully between shows today I will get to visit with Joe Strain, I’m performing in his area today (very exciting!).

Jacka Style Bullwhip finished…

Jacka Style Bullwhip finished…

All that’s left to do on this bullwhip and shellac it.   I’m very pleased with how the transition from handle to thong turned out.

 12 plait jacka bullwhip (style)

This whip has the “Jacka” transistion, but is made more like how I normally make my 6 foot bullwhips.  So it has thicker strands than Jacka’s do and ends in a 6 plait, not 8 plait braid.

I’m off to do a bar gig tonight at the Cloverleaf in Bremerton, WA.
