Beginner’s Bullwhip

Beginner’s Bullwhip

I’ve got another Beginner’s Bullwhip in the works.

These whips have a plaited belly and a 4 plait cowhide overlay.  They are designed for someone who wants to try out whip cracking without investing in a kangaroo whip.  I’ll finish this whip up when I have some more free time and I’ll list in on my IN STOCK whips page.

Beginner’s Bullwhips!

Beginner’s Bullwhips!

I’ve had some extra time the last couple of weeks and used that time to make a couple of the Beginner’s Bullwhips.  These bullwhips are made of cowhide (mostly).  They have a leather core, 4 plait belly and 4 plait overlay.  The knots are kangaroo.

All of these whips are 6 feet long.  I just listed them on the IN STOCK whips page.  There are only three…you can get one, two or all three.

The four beginner’s bullwhips are now finished.  Here are some in progress pictures:

I put a braided belly into these. I think it gives them a bit of extra internal weight that has them throw better than simply having rolled leather (or some other filler)

I don’t put any lead in the handle, these have a nice balance without adding any extra weight.

These four have been shipped out to their new owner.  I still have two more to make.

Bullwhip Making on the Road…

Bullwhip Making on the Road…

I’m currently in Pipestone, MN travelling for the most of the next 7 weeks performing my show.  This week in my hotel room I’m working on making some 4 plait beginner’s bullwhips.

bull whips

I’m working on making six of these bullwhips in cowhide.  Currently I have most of them cut out, and should be able to get started plaiting tomorrow.  Over the summer I perfected my “Hotel Whip Workshop” technique and have come up with a very simple way to make whips in a hotel room.

I’m thinking I might make a video of making one of these whips and offer it as an into to whip making.  You can get all of the needed supplies for cheap at a hardware store and you don’t need a lot of space, so I think it’d be a good lesson for “urban” whip makers.

Stock Whip Kit

Stock Whip Kit

I just shipped out a Make Your Own Stock Whip Kit to an aspiring whip maker.  You get all the parts of the whip including a DVD that takes you through all the steps to making a stock whip.

how to make a whip

This kit is a great way to try your hand at making a whip.  A stock whip is much easier to make than a bullwhip for a beginner and a great confidence booster before you take on a whip that’s more internally complex.

I don’t know how much longer I’ll offer these kits because they are a lot of work on my end to prepare and package all of the materials.  After all the labor I really don’t make much on them.

5 Foot Beginner’s Bullwhip…

5 Foot Beginner’s Bullwhip…

It’s been a while since I’ve made any of my “Beginner’s Bullwhips”.  This one is one of the deluxe models which has a plaited belly.

Bullwhip

This particular bull whip is 5 feet long and would make a great first whip to learn the basic whip cracks on.  This whip is for sale on my IN STOCK whips page.

I’m planning on making a couple of more of these, probably a 6 foot and an 8 foot in the near future.

Another Budget Signal Whip

Another Budget Signal Whip

Last night I finished up the last of the batch of three signal whips I started a week or so ago.  The first two were 4 feet long and this one is 3 1/2 feet long.

signal whip

These budget signal whips all crack great!  There is only one of the 4 foot left and this 3  1/2 foot is available on my IN STOCK whips page.

Today’s project is to finish up a beginners bullwhip that I started a  couple of weeks ago.  I’m trying to finish up all my half started projects before I start anything new.
