I’ve had some extra time the last couple of weeks and used that time to make a couple of the Beginner’s Bullwhips. These bullwhips are made of cowhide (mostly). They have a leather core, 4 plait belly and 4 plait overlay. The knots are kangaroo.
All of these whips are 6 feet long. I just listed them on the IN STOCK whips page. There are only three…you can get one, two or all three.
I’m currently in Pipestone, MN travelling for the most of the next 7 weeks performing my show. This week in my hotel room I’m working on making some 4 plait beginner’s bullwhips.
I’m working on making six of these bullwhips in cowhide. Currently I have most of them cut out, and should be able to get started plaiting tomorrow. Over the summer I perfected my “Hotel Whip Workshop” technique and have come up with a very simple way to make whips in a hotel room.
I’m thinking I might make a video of making one of these whips and offer it as an into to whip making. You can get all of the needed supplies for cheap at a hardware store and you don’t need a lot of space, so I think it’d be a good lesson for “urban” whip makers.
I just shipped out a Make Your Own Stock Whip Kit to an aspiring whip maker. You get all the parts of the whip including a DVD that takes you through all the steps to making a stock whip.
This kit is a great way to try your hand at making a whip. A stock whip is much easier to make than a bullwhip for a beginner and a great confidence booster before you take on a whip that’s more internally complex.
I don’t know how much longer I’ll offer these kits because they are a lot of work on my end to prepare and package all of the materials. After all the labor I really don’t make much on them.
I was looking at what was left of a side of veg tanned cowhide that I had kicking around and realized it was just big enough to make a few signal whips. So yesterday I made some shot bags and plaited up one of the signal whips (it still needs a turkshead):
This Economy Signal Whip is 4 plait and four feet long. I just gave it a few cracks in my living room and it’s got a great crack!
I’m trying to come up with interesting whip related content right now because I’m keeping all the updates for the current bullwhip that I’m working on for the Choose Your Own Bullwhip ebay auction exclusively on the auction listing. You can view this whip’s progress at: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220965764135
Here’s a video of a very unique bullwhip, it’s used by Mel B of the Spice Girls:
I had the same idea of putting a mic in a bullwhip while ago and I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t do it because it had already been done!
You can also see her rockin’ a bullwhip on Dancing with the Stars. It’s at the 3:13 mark:
