4 Foot Bullwhip

4 Foot Bullwhip

I took a quick break from working on the 8 foot bullwhip to make a 4 foot 12 plait bullwhip.  This bullwhip will be in black kangaroo.  Here’s the skin:

and here’s the skin after it was trimmed:

Here’s the finished whip, it’s shipped out to its new owner.

Also with tomorrow being Thanksgiving, I should say there it still time to order a whip for Christmas.  Currently if you get the order in before 12/10/16 it will arrive by Christmas.

Kangaroo Skins at David Morgan!

Kangaroo Skins at David Morgan!

Last week I swung by David Morgan to pick up some kangaroo skins.

I always love visiting them!  I picked up two black kangaroo skins for a 16 foot whip I’m making and a saddle tan kangaroo skin.

I was also surprised to see that they now stock the veg tanned drum stuffed kangaroo in “whiskey” color now!  So they have more than just black and natural tan…that’s great news!  If you need kangaroo for making whips, I always recommend getting it from David Morgan, you’ll always get a great skin!

6 foot Bullwhip

6 foot Bullwhip

My current project is working on a 6 foot 12 plait bullwhip.  The first stop was a drive up to David Morgan to pick out a kangaroo skin for this.

This kangaroo skin is 56 dm and will be the two bellies and the overlay.

Yesterday I got the two inner bellies braided.

As far as internal layers go, all that’s left to do is the outer bolster.  The insides of the whip are assembled quickly compared to the outside.  The internal layers are about 5/6’s of the finished whip, however they represent a little less than 1/3 of the total labor, and they are the most important layers.  If you put a beautiful overlay on top of bad whip guts, the whip is going to suck.

Finished Signal Whips!

Finished Signal Whips!

I finished the two signal whips that I’ve been working on and they are ready to head out to their new owners.  The first one is 12 plait and all black:

The second one is 12 plait and black with a little bit of red:

Here are the two whips together:

Now that these two whips are finished, I’m currently all caught up on my orders, so my hook currently is empty.  Now is a great time to put in an order if you would like a whip to be delivered by Christmas.

5 Foot Bullwhip

5 Foot Bullwhip

Today I started work on a 5 foot 8 plait bullwhip in black kangaroo.  Not much got done today, I simply cut out the core, attached it to the handle:

And I put a coat of grease onto the core to soak in:

This afternoon I’ll get to work on the cutting out the belly, bolster and overlay.  This should ship out in the mail to it’s new owner tomorrow!

Bullwhip Progress…

Bullwhip Progress…

Yesterday I got some plaiting in on the 8 foot 16 plait bullwhip.  I finished the handle:

I also have the bullwhip plaited about 2 1/2 feet into the lash:

Tomorrow I should have the lash finished.

Also right now Tandy Leather Factory has calf skins on sale (http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/search/searchresults/9154-02.aspx).

If you’ve thought about trying to make a bullwhip, these are a good cheaper alternative to kangaroo.  I’ve made a few whips from this stuff in the past:

You have to use a bit more care when braiding with it because calf isn’t quite as strong as kangaroo.   Also these skins aren’t drum stuffed, so you’ll have to grease them by hand before you can do any braiding with it.
