Two tone bullwhip for sale…

Two tone bullwhip for sale…

This whip was part of the pair that I made to start learning how to do two handed work.  This whip is kinda funky because it has a very thin handle.  This whip measures 5 feet 10 ish inches from the butt of the handle to the fall hitch.  It’s handle is two tone 8 plait and the thong is two tone 12 plait.

This whip is made from kangaroo (except the handle foundation).  It has 3 plaited bellies from very thin kangaroo, a 4th plaited belly for thin kangaroo and the 12 plait overlay from medium kangaroo.  This whip has a 10 inch handle an a whitehide fall that I got from Mike Murphy.

9 foot bullwhip details…

9 foot bullwhip details…

So the bullwhip that I finished is just a smidge (1/2 inch) shorter than 9 feet, so I’m calling this bullwhip a 9 footer.

9 foot bullwhip

This whip has an 8 inch steel handle and an 8 foot 3ish inch thong.  The whip had a core, plaited kangaroo belly, bolster, 2nd plaited kangaroo belly, 2nd bolster and finally the 12 plait kangaroo overlay.

This bullwhip has a lead loaded butt, and is quite heavy.

These pictures were taken before I put a coat a shellac on this bullwhip.  I’ll take some pictures of the whip with the shellac shortly.

Here’s what I would change about this whip if I redid it:

  • Use a thicker core
  • use thinner kangaroo hide for the bellies

I think the profile of this whip could be a bit slimmer.  and the thicker core would make the whip a little more “firm”.

I’ve added this whip to the “whips for sale” page on this website. Click here to order this bullwhip!

Heavy Bullwhip

Heavy Bullwhip

The overlay for the bullwhip that I am working on is almost finished and looks like it’s going to be just shy of 9 feet.  The whip is very heavy!!  It’s two bellies are heavy kangaroo and the bolsters are a fairly thick cowhide.

I’m very curious as to how this whip will handle when it’s finished.  I’ll probably finish the plaiting tomorrow and the knots on friday and get in a couple of test cracks that same day.

Also I got my side of whitehide for falls in and it’s a friggin’ huge hide!  I’m going to have falls for the rest of my life and enough leftover to give some to my grandkids in my will.

I’ll probably be listing whitehide falls for sale on my website sometime soon.

3 feet deep

3 feet deep

So far I’ve got about  three feet of the bullwhip that I’m working on plaited.  I’ll post pictures of this whip tomorrow.  This whip is turning out very thick and  heavy.  for the two bellies I used a heavier roo hide, and in the future I’m going to use a thinner hide for the bellies and the thicker stuff for the overlay.

Progress report

Progress report

Today I’ve cut out the overlay of the bullwhip that I’m working on, and am currently paring it.  The overlay is natural tan kangaroo and 12 plait.

I just remember another thing that David Morgan mentioned to me.  i mentioned that I liked whipmaking as a  hobby and his reply was, “it can be very challenging, and a little hard on the hands”.  I remembered that because my hands are tired from cutting and paring.

Also the 8 foot bullwhip that I had made earlier has sold, so it’s no longer available.

Work on 8 footy bullwhip

Work on 8 footy bullwhip

Tonight I finished the 2nd belly of the bullwhip that I am working on now.  The projected length is going to be 8 ish feet.  I still need to cut out the 2nd bolster for this whip.

I had to cut out and plaited the 2nd belly once before, but I had to undo and recut another set.  I wasn’t happy with how it ended up laying on the whip.  I wasted a bunch of kangaroo with the miscut, but hopefully it will make a better whip in the end.

Tomorrow I should have the 2nd bolster cut out and have started cutting out the 12 plait overlay.
