Bullwhips have been becoming more main stream. However I'm in a strange position, when I meet people and they ask what I do, I say "magician...with a hobby business of making bullwhips".

Fortunately for me I run in circles of show people, so it's not uncommon for me to meet a professional jump roper or something like that at a party.

Also whips right now are getting very popular with variety performers, so the general public is getting exposed to them in a more positive light.

You & I both (a whip nerd). It's always difficult to explain your interests to someone when they just don't get it. When the subject comes up, I play it cool and say in general terms that I'm a leathercrafter, with interests in braiding. This usually goes over well with most people. Otherwise, the first thing that people think is bondage & sex toys, or wonder why I waste my time on such things.

Jeff,

Sandwich bags is a good idea! The Tamales work...they are still slower than braiding shorter strands...but much faster than untangling the whole length of the strand. I think my issue with the tamales is in my head it should be as fast as plaiting a shorter strand (which is a dream).

Louie, How about trying sandwich bags? Fold up each strand and put it into a ziplog bag. Pull out just enough to do 2 feet or so. Strands might not tangle up as much I would think.

I've worked with a white skin from Paul once last year, or was it this year? Anyway, it was very nice leather!

BUT

If you are planing on doing two-tone work with it, be sure to really stretch ALL your strands (not just the white ones) very well a few times, because I used black along with it and the black stretched a lot more than the white during plaiting and I was forced to re-size all the strands part way through the whip because the plaiting kept on spriralling around the whip. I would have thought that the white would stretch more, but it was very stable. Just keep in mind that in order to get the leather white in veg tan, I believe they tan it twice, so the leather itself is tanned differently than your normal colors, which I guess accounts for the difference in stretch...

Anyway they are lovely hides aren't they?

I was the lucky one! Thank you, Louie, for getting together with me. You are a very talented entertainer, and one heck of a whip cracker as well as whip maker. Spencer and I both enjoyed ourselves a lot, and it was a great learning experience for me.

And yes, I did make it up to David Morgan's shop. I met the whole gang, I stepped up and bought a couple of hats, and (gasp!) I even bought a whip! A cherry little 6' bullwhip in natural tan. Got some fun pics with David, and he cracked my 10' 2001 whip for me. Everyone there was so friendly and accomodating. I got to see the whole shop and see what Alex and Megan were up to, and they were very happy to show me their work. The 6' whip I bought had been made by Alex and Megan and had been hanging on the peg for a few months. I cracked it out of curiosity and decided that I would give it a good home.

Hope our paths cross again real soon!
